What is the first priority for students, teachers, and parents in the science classroom?
Safety is the #1 priority.
What are the requirements for entering a science room and starting laboratory work?
Students must follow all written and verbal instructions, must never work alone without an instructor present, and must not touch equipment, chemicals, or materials until instructed to do so.
What is the policy regarding food and beverages in the laboratory?
Eating food, drinking beverages, and chewing gum are prohibited, and laboratory glassware should never be used as food or beverage containers.
What should a student do if they do not understand a part of the laboratory procedure?
Ask the instructor before proceeding.
What is the protocol for maintaining a tidy workspace?
Work areas must be kept clean; only laboratory instructions, worksheets, and reports should be present, while books and backpacks are stored in the classroom area.
What specific safety equipment locations must every student know?
The first aid kit, eyewash station, safety shower, fire extinguisher, fire blanket, fire alarm, and exits.
When should a student use the fume hood?
When working with volatile substances or poisonous vapors.
What is the correct procedure for disposing of chemical waste?
Check waste container labels twice. Do not mix chemicals in sink drains (sinks are for water and designated solutions only). Insoluble materials like metals or filter paper go in proper waste containers.
In the event of a fire drill during a lab, what four steps must be taken?
Containers must be closed, gas valves turned off, fume hoods turned off, and any electrical equipment turned off.
How should sharp instruments, such as knives, be handled and carried?
Carry them with tips and points pointing down and away, always cut away from the body, grasp only by the handles, and never try to catch falling sharp instruments.
When are laboratory goggles required to be worn?
Any time chemicals, heat, or glassware are used, without exception.
What are the clothing requirements for students during lab activities?
Long hair must be tied back, dangling jewelry and loose clothing must be secured, and shoes must completely cover the foot (no sandals).
What is the specific phrase to yell if someone is injured to get the instructor's attention?

Use a rubber bulb or pipet pump; never use mouth suction to fill a pipet.
What is the correct method for diluting strong acids?
Always add acid to water, swirl or stir the solution, and be careful of the heat produced.
How should broken glass be handled and disposed of?
Never handle broken glass with bare hands; use a brush and dustpan to clean it up and place it in the designated glass disposal container.
What precautions should be taken before inserting glass tubing into a rubber stopper?
Always lubricate the glassware and protect hands with towels or cotton gloves. If glassware becomes "frozen" in a stopper, take it to the instructor.

Point the open end of the test tube away from yourself and anyone else.
How can you safely determine if a piece of glass or metal is hot before touching it?
