Trennbare Verben (Separable Verbs)

What is it?

Separable verbs are verbs with a prefix that separates from the verb in a sentence.

The prefix then moves to the end of the sentence.

Example:

Ich rufe dich morgen an.

I call you tomorrow.

When do you use separable verbs?

You use them very often in everyday German, for example when you:

• call someone

• arrive or leave somewhere

• start or finish something

• meet someone or go somewhere

• come back or depart

Why do you use them?

The prefix changes the meaning of the verb completely.

Example:

kommen = to come
ankommen = to arrive

So the prefix gives a more specific meaning.

How does it work?

Rule:

Subject + conjugated verb + rest + prefix at the end

Example:

Ich rufe dich heute Abend an.

I call you tonight.

Important separable verbs

• anrufen = to call

• aufstehen = to get up

• ausgehen = to go out

• zurückkommen = to come back

• abholen = to pick up

• einziehen = to move in

• ankommen = to arrive

• losgehen = to leave/start going

• mitkommen = to come along

• einschlafen = to fall asleep

Word order

The prefix ALWAYS goes to the end of the sentence in the present tense.

Example:

Ich stehe um 7 Uhr auf.

I get up at 7 o’clock.

Ich rufe dich heute Abend an.

I call you tonight

Wir stehen um 8 Uhr auf.

We get up at 8 o’clock.

Ich komme im Oktober nach Italien zurück

I come back to Italy in October.

Wir gehen heute Abend aus.

We go out tonight.

Ich hole dich vom Flughafen ab.

I pick you up from the airport.

Wir sind nach zwei Monaten in Australien nach Italien zurückgekommen.

We came back to Italy after two months in Australia.

Ich habe dich während unserer Reise durch Thailand, Laos und Kambodscha oft angerufen.

I called you often during our trip through Thailand, Laos and Cambodia.

Wir sind zusammen auf Bali angekommen und haben dort viele Tage verbracht.

We arrived in Bali together and spent many days there

Ich hole dich im Oktober in Italien vom Flughafen ab.

I will pick you up at the airport in Italy in October.

Wir gehen heute Abend in Italien mit unseren Freunden aus.

We are going out in Italy tonight with our friends.
