Chemical Change
A process in which bonds are broken and rearranged to form a new substance.
Physical Change
A change where the chemical composition stays the same, but the spacing between the molecules changes.
Homogeneous Mixture
A mixture with a uniform composition throughout.
Heterogeneous Mixture
A mixture where components are visibly distinct.
Endothermic Change
A change that absorbs energy (heat) from the surroundings.
Exothermic Change
A change that releases energy (heat) to the surroundings.
Law of Conservation of Mass
States that no matter is created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction; the mass of reactants equals the mass of products.
Sublimation
The process of a substance changing directly from a solid to a gas.
Density
An intensive property that does not depend on the amount of matter.
Extensive Property
A property that depends on the amount of matter in a sample.
Filtration
A technique used to separate a heterogeneous mixture by pouring it through filter paper.
Distillation
A technique used for separating a soluble salt from water.
Evaporation
The process where a liquid turns into gas at its surface.
Condensation
The process where a gas turns into a liquid.
