System
A set of things that are interconnected in ways that produce distinct patterns of behavior.
Systems Thinking
An approach that attempts to understand how system connections amplify or dampen the effects of human actions, identifying system characteristics to predict potential outcomes.
Sustainable
The capacity of a system to endure over time.
Stock
The accumulated quantity of a system element measured at a specific point in time, such as a fish population in a fishery model.
Flows
The inflows and outflows that alter a system stock over time, represented as pipes and valves in system diagrams.
Positive Feedback Loop
A feedback process (also known as reinforcing or amplifying feedback) where an initial change is exacerbated or amplified, resulting in a runaway process.
Negative Feedback Loop
A feedback process (also known as balancing or stabilizing feedback) where a response counteracts the initial change to keep the system stable.
System Delays
Time lags within a system that act as shock absorbers, make quick changes difficult, and lead to large oscillations in system behavior.

Tipping Point
A critical threshold in a system where small, incremental changes trigger a sudden shift into a different state.
Complicated System
A system controlled by a few variables with linear causality that can be predicted and rebuilt by experts.
Complex System
An adaptable system consisting of a sizeable number of variables with diverse relationships, making prediction and expert rebuilding difficult.

System Hierarchy
A characteristic of healthy systems where nested subsystem levels serve and support the greater whole.
Self-Organization
The ability of a system to structure itself and make its internal organization more complex over time.
System Resilience
The ability of a system to bounce back from external stress or disturbance, which is enhanced by diversity and redundancy.
Leverage Points
Strategic places within a complex system where a small shift or intervention can produce significant changes in overall system behavior.
Sahel
A semi-arid region south of the Sahara Desert (meaning "shore" in Arabic) that receives 100–500 mm/yr (4–20 inches) of precipitation and serves as a cultural and ecological transition zone.
Desertification
The degradation of formerly productive land and the gradual expansion of deserts.
Drylands
Arid to semi-arid regions covering 41\text{\null}\% of Earth's land surface that host approximately 38\text{\null}\% of the human population.
Albedo
The reflectivity of a surface; high albedo surfaces reflect more light, resulting in a cooler land surface and reduced evaporation.

Climate-Vegetation Feedback Hypothesis
A conceptual model demonstrating how reduced vegetation increases albedo and dust, cooling the land surface and decreasing evaporation and rainfall, which further degrades vegetation.
Commons
Shared resources characterized by high consumption rivalry (can be depleted) and low excludability (difficult to prevent access).
Tragedy of the Commons
A phenomenon where individual actors behaving rationally in self-interest collectively deplete or degrade a shared resource, producing an irrational group outcome.
Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs)
Marine boundary zones extending up to 200 miles off a nation's coast under national jurisdiction, beyond which waters are unregulated high seas.
Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY)
The maximum rate at which a fish population or biological resource can be harvested annually without exceeding its regenerative capacity.

Individual Transferable Quotas (ITQs)
A management system where commercial enterprises purchase rights to harvest a specific proportion of the Total Allowable Commercial Catch (TACC).
Mutual Coercion, Mutually Agreed Upon
A principle advocated by Garrett Hardin involving social policies and agreements to restrict commons usage in order to preserve long-term freedoms.
Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)
Designated ocean zones protected from commercial exploitation; strategically expanding global MPAs by 5\text{\null}\% could increase overall future fish catch by at least 20\text{\null}\% .
