The Murray–Darling Basin uses Integrated Drainage Basin Management under the 2012 Basin Plan to return 3,200 GL of water per year to the environment, improving sustainability and wetlands such as Nimmie-Caira (47,000 hectares restored). However, this creates conflict between stakeholders such as the National Farmers’ Federation and WWF Australia, as reducing water extraction improves ecosystems but limits agricultural production and economic output.
