What is chemistry?
The study of matter, its chemical and physical properties, and the chemical and physical changes it undergoes. As matter undergoes changes it gains and loses energy.
What is matter
Anything that has mass and occupies space
Energy
The ability to do work and accomplish some change
The three states of matter
Solid-particles are very close together definite shape and volume
Liquid-particles are slightly close together definite volume but no definite shape
Gas- particles are widely separated no definite shape or volume
What is physical property
is observed without changing the composition or identity of a substance EX: color, melting/boiling point, temperature, etc.
What is physical change?
produces a recognizable difference in the appearance of a substance without causing change in its composition or identity
What is chemical property
Chemical property is the observation of changes in composition only after a chemical reaction. EX: fire
What is chemical reactions(or chemical change)
The conversion into one more more different substances by rearranging, removing, or adding atoms. EX: keep in mind that you can’t go back on chemical reactions. Like if you were to bake cookies you can’t bring back the raw egg, flour, etc
What are intensive properties
a property of matter independent of the quantity of the substance. EX: color, melting point, boiling point, density. Think about the comparison between an ice cube and a glacier, a human adult and a baby.
What are extensive properties
a property of mater that depends on the quantity of the substance. EX: mass or volume
What is a pure substance
a substance that only has one component
What is a mixture
a combination of two or more substances
What is an element
What is a compound
