Integumentary System
System that protects the body from harmful factors such as microorganisms that could cause disease/infections, pollutants, and ultra-violet rays.
Skin
Serves as a protective coat, helps to maintain normal body temperature, acts as the largest sense receptor responding to touch, heat, and cold, and synthesizes/makes vitamin D activated by sunlight.
Epidermis
The outermost layer of the skin that contains dead skin cells.
Dermis
The second layer of the skin which contains several accessory structures.
Eccrine Gland
A type of sweat gland present to the entire human body.
Apocrine Sweat Glands
Sweat glands that reside on the axillary area, originate at the areola nipples, genitals, and anal region.
Merocrine Sweat Gland
A type of sweat gland found on the palms and soles of the feet.
Arrector Pili Muscle
Involuntary muscle responsible for creating goose bumps.
Hypodermis
Also known as the subcutaneous layer; made up of adipose tissues, blood vessels, and nerves, providing insulator and cushioning functions to our body.
Hair
Structure present throughout the body that is made up of the protein keratin.
Shaft
The part of the hair made up of dead cells.
Hair Follicles
Structures found beneath the dermis where mitosis occurs.
Hair Bulb
Extension of the hair follicle located at the hypodermal area.
Nail
Hard structures that are adaptations of the epidermis and made up of keratin, used for protection, grasping objects, and scratching.
