Five Layers
keratinized, stratified squamous
-1st 3 layers living keratinocytes, last 2 layers- dead dying
Stratum Basale (1) Living
3 Cell Types:
Keratinocytes: produce keratin
Melanocytes: scattered among pre-keratinocytes
- produce melanin transferred to keratinocytes by melanosomes
Merkel/Tactile: respond to light touch & FREE NERVE ENDINGS: respond to pain
Stratum Spinosum (spikey) (2) Living
-connected by desmosomes (reason y keratinocytes look spikey); allows to resist tension & pulling
-Melanosomes & Dendritic (Langerhans)- patrol & defend against microbes & skin cancer
Stratum Granulosum (Grainy) (3) Living
-cells flattened, layer thin
Keratinization: cells accumulate keratohyalin granules (form keratin fibers in upper layers)
-cells accumulate water resistant glycolipid (slows H2O loss)
Stratum Lucidum (4) Dead
-only in thick skin (palms & soles), sweat glands
-thin, translucent rows of clear, flat, dead keratinocytes filled w/ eleidin
Stratum Corneum (5) Dead
-flat, enucleated, keratinized dead cells connected- desmosomes
-barrier against biological, chemical, & physical assaults
