Threading the machine
Process of placing the spool of thread on the spool pin and guiding it through various components to prepare for sewing.
Spool pin
The part of the sewing machine where the spool of thread is placed.
Thread guide
Component that directs the thread from the spool pin to the tension disc.
Tension disc
Part of the machine that controls the tension of the thread.
Take-up lever
Component that pulls the thread up and over during the sewing process.
Eye of the needle
The small hole at the end of the needle through which the thread passes.
Bobbin
A small spool that holds the lower thread in a sewing machine.
Foot pedal
Control used to operate the sewing machine's speed.
Straight stitch
A type of stitch used for sewing seams and hems on non-stretch fabrics.
Zig-zag stitch
A stitch used to finish raw edges on seams to prevent fraying.
Embroidery stitch
A decorative stitch used for embellishing fabric.
Buttonhole stitch
A stitch used for creating buttonholes on household items.
Needle breaks
Occurs when the needle is put in back to front, is blunt, or cannot penetrate the fabric.
Thread breaks
Happens when the thread is not threaded correctly or is of poor quality.
Looped stitches
Result from loose top tension or incorrect threading.
Slipped stitches
Caused by a blunt needle or pushing/pulling the fabric while sewing.
Puckered seams
Result from tight tension or using different threads on top and bottom.
Seams
Used to join pieces of fabric together to create clothing and other textile items.
Flat seam
The most common type of seam used in sewing.
Pinking shears
Special scissors used to neaten raw edges, suitable for closely woven fabrics.
Zig zag stitch (seam finish)
Used to neaten seam edges and is suitable for most fabrics.
Edge matching
Technique where edges are folded inwards, pressed, tacked, and sewn, suitable for lightweight fabrics.
