Stratified columnar epithelium - location and function?
Male urethra, protection
Transitional epithelium - location and function?
Urinary bladder, stretches and relaxes to accommodate urine volume change
Found near the apical membrane & is used to unite the cells that are next to each other; it prevents material from passing down the side of the cell & getting into the body without going through the cell itself
Tight junction
Used to make sure the apical membrane is convex & not concave; it is located near the apical membrane, just basal to the tight membrane
Adherens
Found in areas of high stress; uses a system of plaques & fibers to bind the adjacent cells together so that the stresses will not pull apart
Desmosome
Used to supply a direct route from one cell to another; this accommodates rapid passage of mostly ions & sending messages from cell to cell
Gap junction
