• Tried to convert natives to Christianity and develop Caste system

French Colonization

• Interested in fur trade

• trading settlements more than actually showing up on their lands

  • Married American Indian women to maintain kinship and healthy trading relations

    • Ojibwe Indians: example of mutual benefit of these relationships as french introduced them to iron cookware/manufactured cloth and indians prepared beaver skins for markets

Dutch Colonization

• Established trading center on Hudson River, economic goals

• No interest in conversion

• Established New Amsterdam, hub of trade, helped economic growth
