Why was the Middle East strategically important during the Cold War?
Containing a vast reserve of oil and gas, the Middle East lies at the crossroads of world trade due to the Suez Canal that runs through Egypt. The location of the Middle East on the USSR's southern border also gave it added military importance.
How did the Cold War affect the Middle East?
superpower rivalry meaning that both sides sought opportunities to expand their influence, often manipulated by the smaller power
How did the US gain influence in the Middle East during the Cold War?
It was able to secure Western oil supplies in the region via support for traditional regimes like Saudi Arabia. The US also prevented Soviet influence from expanding, preventing Iran, Egypt, and Turkey from falling under Soviet pressure.
