Intrapersonal communication
The process of communication with oneself which takes place within a person’s mind through thinking, self-talk, reflection, imagination, and memory.
Self-talk
The silent conversation people have with themselves used to give reminders, manage emotions, or encourage oneself before completing a difficult task.
Self-reflection
The process of examining one’s thoughts, feelings, decisions, and actions to understand what happened, recognize mistakes, and identify ways to improve.
Journaling
The practice of writing down personal experiences, thoughts, emotions, and realizations to organize ideas and understand feelings more clearly.
Visualization
Creating a mental picture of an action, situation, or desired result to help a person prepare mentally, stay focused, and build confidence.
Decision-making
Thinking about different choices, examining possible advantages and disadvantages, and selecting the most suitable action.
Identity
Who a person is based on their experiences, relationships, roles, and connections with others.
Self-concept
How a person sees, describes, and evaluates themselves.
The looking-glass self
A concept by Cooley (1902) explaining that people often see themselves through the reactions of others and form beliefs about who they are based on these responses.
Social comparison
The process of comparing one's own abilities, appearance, behavior, or achievements with others to understand oneself (Hargie, 2011).
Johari Window
A model that organizes personal information according to whether it is known or unknown to oneself and to other people.
Open or Public Self
A dimension of the Johari Window containing information that is known both to the person and to others.
Blind Self
A dimension of the Johari Window containing information that other people notice but the person does not recognize.
Hidden or Private Self
A dimension of the Johari Window containing information that the person knows but chooses not to share with others.
Unknown Self
A dimension of the Johari Window containing qualities, abilities, or experiences that are not yet known to the person or to others.
Self-perception
How a person understands their own qualities, abilities, feelings, and experiences.
Self-esteem
How people value and feel about themselves.
Self-efficacy
The belief in one's ability to complete a particular task.
Actual self
Who a person believes they are at present.
Ideal self
The person someone wants to become.
Self-presentation
The way people use communication and behavior to create an impression in different situations.
Self-perception biases
Mental patterns that influence thoughts and can cause people to focus on incomplete information, make inaccurate assumptions, or judge themselves unfairly.
Negativity Bias
The tendency to give greater attention and importance to negative experiences than to positive ones.
Confirmation Bias
The tendency to notice and accept information that supports an existing belief while overlooking evidence that challenges it.
Spotlight Bias
The tendency to overestimate how much other people notice or care about one's appearance, behavior, or mistakes.
Fixed-Mindset Bias
The belief that abilities and personal qualities cannot be significantly improved.
False Consensus Bias
The tendency to assume that other people share one's opinions, preferences, or behavior more than they actually do.
