First hald of para 1 - for direct democracy

Point evidence explination eval and link

  • P Its the purest form of democracy - as everyone ahs a direct say on the issues rather than having them communicated through a democracy

  • E - We have used refferndums in the UK to decide on issues, eg the Brexit refferendum had a 72% voter turnout (Highest turnout since 1992 parlimentry general election)

  • E - This therefore increases legitimacty of the system which increases the incentive to be politically involved

Second Half of para 1 - against direct democracy

Point evidence explination eval and link

Point - However direct democracy can lead to tyranny of the majority —> just because everyone votes, doesnt mean everyone views are represented. (its a majority wins situation, which can ultimatly reduce legitimicacy)

evidence - The 2016 Brexit refferendum was very close - (51.9% voted to leave the EU, and 48.1% of citizens voted to remain in the EU)

Led to mass marches for a re-refferendum —> 400k people

explination - This shows that direct democracy isnt nescasserilly the system where people’s views get represented to the fullest extent (due to tyranny of the majority)

eval - However, ultimetly, this is not the case in most instances —> most of the time the results will genrally reflect the desires of the population.

for example in ireland 72% of the popualtion voted for devolution.
