What does the author of “Stolen Focus” mean by human downgrading?

“Human downgrading” refers to a systemic weakening of core human capacities – attention, deep thinking, shared reality, and collective problem-solving

Societal risks: if we downgrade our attention spans and shared sense-making we cannot adress existential threats like global challenges

Awareness to this is not enough to counter this, a systematic reform is needed

How can pollution affect focus and attention?

Pollution can affect focus and attention by disrupting the endocrine system, which regulates brain function and development.

Pollution is therefore not just a health issue; it is a cognitive and democratic issue. It biologically undermines society’s ability to concentrate, think critically, and govern itself.

Give some examples of pollutants that have been linked to loss of focus

  • Air pollution and cognitive performance: air pollution correlates with reduced cognitive performance, and is also associated with increased ADHD risks

  • Lead and IQ: lead exposure reduced IQ and attention control, and results in impaired impulse control and long-term cognitive damage

  • Chemicals and brain developement: pesticides, BPA, flame retardants and other chemicals disrupt brain development

  • EDCs and brain development: endocrine-disrupting chemicals affect brain development, low-dose effects during early life

  • Ultra processed nutrition: blood sugar instability, inflammation, cognitive fluctuations
