What is binomial nomenclature?
A unique name for each species based on morphology and anatomy
What is the first word of binomial nomenclature?
The scientific name of the genus
What is the second word of binomial nomenclature?
The scientific name of the species
Why is taxonomy important?
It helps connect organisms to each other which helps with study and research and makes it easier for scientists who speak different language
Who first came up with classifications?
Aristotle
Who is considered the “father of modern taxonomy”?
Carolus Linnaeus
What is taxonomy based off of?
Morphology and biology
Levels of taxonomy?
Domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species
What are the main classes of animals that we will look at in ANS 282?
Mammalia, reptilia, aves, osteichthyes
What is the respiratory of aves like?
It is one of the most complicated respiratory system because the bones are also involved in respiration so aves have continuous oxygen supply
How does respiration in osteichthyes work?
They pump water over their gills to obtain oxygen
How do mammalia and aves thermoregulate?
They’re homeothermic (they maintain body temperature at a constant level)
How do reptilia and osteichthyes?
They’re poikilotherms (they thermoregulate by water or air temperture)
How do mammalia reproduce?
They’re viviparous (give birth to live fetus and have mammary glands)
How do aves reproduce?
They’re oviparous (young hatch from eggs)
How do reptilia and osteichthyes?
Most are oviparous (young hatch from eggs) but some are viviparous (live birth) or ovovivparous (incubated in an egg than hatch inside the mother and born alive)
What do mammalia, reptilia and aves skeletons have in common?
They are all (or all descended from) tetrapods (4-limbed vertebrates)
