corrupt bargain

a controversial deal that occurred in election in 1824. John Quincy Adams and Aaron Burr had tied with electoral votes so it went to the house of reps to decide. however Adams was winning until Henry Clay persuaded the group to vote for Jackson so Jackson won the presidency. Jacksonian Democracy

a political movement during the early 1800s. it promoted more voting rights for ordinary white men and farmers so they could also have a say in the gov’t not just rich land owners. it was during Jacksons presidency and a little before but he strongly believed in this.

Indian Removal Act

law passed during Jacksons presidency. it made all native Americans need to move west of the Mississippi river. it was a very harsh removal of them. some families had to restart their lives and many suffered especially during the Trail of Tears. Jackson did this to open up the lands for white settlers to help expand the US.

Worcester vs. Georgia

an important case where the supreme court said that Georgia can’t take any land from the CHerokee Nation or control them because they were a separate nation. however this just got pushed off because the court didn’t have the power to deal with tribes only the federal gov’t but Jackson and and Georgia just ignored it.

Trail of Tears

a forced journey that the Native American tribes especially the Cherokee had to take because they were being kicked off their land from the Indian Removal Act. many people suffered, got sick, hurt and even died on the journey.

it was tax on things from other countries. it made things more expensive. the north liked it because it help their businesses but the south didn’t like it because it hurt their economy and made stuff too expensive. it made the South very upset a created an argument

when a state refuses to follow a law. like if a law is passed in the US but a state doesn’t like it they will say they won’t obey this. like when South Carolina refused to obey the tariff of abominations

second bank of the US

a big national bank. it helpd keep the economy stable and helped handle the money, it also was able to give loans to businesses. jackson didn’t like it, thought it gave too much power to the gov’t. it helped the countrys money but it was very controversial. Jackson eventually shuts it down

when Jackson shut down the second bank he put the money into smaller local banks which is pet banks that he trusted. they were often run by his friends.

panic of 1837

a big economic and infancial crisis for the US. banks and businesses ran out for money, people lost jobs, farms. It happened due to risk loans and bad bank practices after Jackson closed the second bank and sued pet banks. it was a very hard time for lots of people.

Decribe the differences between Jacksonian and Jeffersonian democracies?

jefferson believed in a simple small government that gave more power to states then the gov’t. he also liked education and land-owning men. he wanted smart and responsible leaders. however Jackosn believed in more power to the common man and getting everyone involved instead of just the wealthy. he also liked a strong leader. he also didn’t fully trust elites and banks and wanted them to have less power.

because he thought it was fair to give ordinary people a chance to work. instead of the same wealthy and political people.he believed it would make the government more connected to ordinary people. and stop gov’t workers from being too powerful.

he tried to keep it strong and stable especially with its power it mostly controlled the economy. he gave loans to businesses but it was hard for smaller ones bc he wanted to make sure the economy was still stable. He clashed a lot with Jackson, Jackson didn’t like the power of the bank.

What caused the Nullification Crisis and how did Jackson respond to it?

the Tariff of Abominations caused it because it raised taxes on imported goods and hurt the southern economy so they said they had the right to nullify the law. Jackson said that they couldn’t ignore federal laws, so it would keep the country united. Jackson threatened to said a military to make them follow the law.they lowered the tax a little bit to ease tensions

what caused the panic of 1837? Why was Harrison able to win the election of 1840?

when Jackson shut down the second bank it hurt the economy. he put the money into pet banks but they made risk loans and bank practicing so it hurt the economy. people lost jobs, businesses failed, it was a a hard time. people blamed Jackson’s democracy for the Panic of 1837 and Harrison was being seen as a strong leader who was a man of the people. Harrison started to become popular and started to get more voters, which made him win.
