When is an instrument rating required?
-When acting as PIC under IFR or in weather conditions less that prescribed for VFR (61.3)
-When carrying passengers for compensation or hire on cross-country flights in excess of 50nm or at night (61.133)
-For flight in Class A airspace (91.135)
-For Special VFR between sunset and sunrise (91.157)
Pilot Requirements
Private Pilot Certificate, read/write/speak english, hold current medical/BasicMed, passed Instrument knowledge test in last 2 years
Logging instrument time
61.51
A person may log instrument time only for that flight time when the person operates the aircraft solely by reference to instruments under actual or simulated instrument flight conditions.
(An authorized instructor may log instrument time when conducting instrument flight instruction in actual instrument flight conditions)
Minimum aeronautical experience (61.65)
-50 hours X country PIC time (10 hours in airplanes)
-40 hours actual or simulated instrument time (15 hours with CFII, including one X-country of 250nm with 3 kinds of appr using nav systems with a filed IFR flight plan, and 3 hours of instrument training in last 2 calendar months prior to practical test)
Recency of Experience (6 HITS)
-Flight review required after 24 calendar months including at least 1 hr of flight and 1 hr of ground training. (Can be superceded by practical test for another pilot certificate, proficiency check, WINGS phase completion, flight simulator or FTD as long as it meets certain requirements 61.56).
-To carry passengers as PIC (61.57) 3 takeoff and landings in last 90 days, at periods between 1 hour after sunset to 1 hour before sunrise, 3 takeoff and landings must be to a full stop.
-To act as PIC under IFR (61.57) Within the 6 calendar months preceding the month of flight, you performed and logged 6 instrument approaches, Holding procedures, Intercepting & Tracking courses through the use of navigational electronic Systems.
IFR Recency Timeline
No 6 HITS logged in the last 6 months? You have an additional 6 months to regain currency by performing the 6 HITS with a safety pilot
-Safety Pilot requirements: holds at least PPL for proper category and class and valid medical/BasicMed, have adequate vision, aircraft must have dual control system
More than 6 months since IFR current? An instrument proficiency check (IPC) administered by a CFII or examiner is required
What must be recorded in the logbook to meet recent instrument experience requirements
Location & type of each instrument approach accomplished, and name of safety pilot (if required),
Use of full flight SIM, FTD, or AD for acquiring instrument aeronautical experience (61.51)
-Max of 30 hours under Part 142 in approved full flight simulator or FTD, max of 20 hours if not completed under Part 142
-Use of FAA approved Aviation Training Device (Max 10 in basic, Max 20 in advanced)
-No more than 20 hours of total instrument time can be credited in a full flight simulator, FTD, or ATD (unless under Part 142)
Logging instrument approach procedures requirements
1. You must operate the aircraft, FFS, ATD, or FTD solely by reference to instruments 61.51 (CFII may log approaches conducted by students in actual IMC)
2. Be established on each required segment of the IAP down to its published minimums (MDA or DA). The Initial (starting at IAF), Intermediate, and Final approach segments are required for logging the approach unless when radar vectored to final by ATC
3. If conducted in simulated IMC in an aircraft, or in a FFS, ATD, or FTD, simulated conditions must continue down to MDA or DA
4. In an aircraft, flight must be in actual of simulated IMC
5. In an aircraft, if conditions change from actual IMC to VMC during the final approach segment, you can still log the approach
Personal documents required for flight and Aircraft documents required for flight
Personal: Pilot Cert, Medical Cert, Authorized photo ID, Radio license (foreign flights)
Aircraft: ARROW
Aircraft maintenance inspections required for IFR
A - Annual Inspection, 12 calendar months
V - VOR check every 30 days (for IFR 91.171)
1 - 100 hour tach time if for hire
A - Altimeter (automatic altitude reporting used by transponder) & static system every 24 calendar months (for IFR in controlled airspace 91.411)
T - Transponder every 24 calendar months (91.413)
E - ELT (91.207) inspected every 12 calendar months, battery must be replaced after more than 1 hr of cumulative use or ½ its useful battery life has expired
S - Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) required inspections
A - Airworthiness Directives
Briefings
Passenger Briefing: SAFETY
Taxi Briefing: ARCH - Assigned/planned runway, Route, Crossings and HS instructions, Hot spots & Hazards
Takeoff Briefing: DEPARTS - Departure review (takeoff type, initial heading, first fix/course, clearance readout)m Establish Expectations (PIC, transfer of controls), Plan/special considerations (weather, visibility, terrain, unfamiliar field), Alternate (takeoff alternate if needed or return plan), Runway conditions ad length, Trouble/Tactics (rejected takeoff, engine failure), Speak up! Questions/concerns?
