The First 27 Amendments

1st amendment

Amendment that dealt with freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly and petition. It contains the establishment clause.

2nd amendment

Amendment that deals with the right to bear arms.

3rd amendment

Amendment that prohibits the required quartering of troops.

4th amendment

Amendment that protects against unreasonable search and seizure.

5th amendment

Criminal Proceedings; Due Process; Eminent Domain; Double Jeopardy; Protection from Self incrimination

6th amendment

Amendment that guarantees a speedy and public trial and the right to counsel.

7th amendment

Guarantees the right to jury trial in civil suits involving $20.00 or more.

8th amendment

Amendment that prohibits excessive bail amounts and cruel and unusual punishment.

9th amendment

Amendment that protects rights not listed in the Bill of Rights.

10th amendment

Powers Reserved to the States

11th amendment

Prohibits citizens of one state or foreign country from suing another state.

12th amendment

Amendment that puts president and vice president on same ticket

13th amendment

Abolished slavery in the United States

14th amendment

An amendment to the U. S. Constitution passes in 1868 that made all persons born or naturalized in the United States-including former slave-citizens of the country.

15th amendment

African American Male Voting Rights

16th amendment

Amendment to the United States Constitution (1913) gave Congress the power to tax income.

17th amendment

Passed in 1913, this amendment to the Constitution calls for the direct election of senators by the voters instead of their election by state legislatures.

18th amendment

1919, prohibited the non-medical sale of alcohol.

19th amendment

Amendment that gave women the right to vote

20th amendment

1932; moves inaugural date to Jan. 20th; get rid of lame duck period

21st amendment

Amendment which ended the Prohibition of alcohol in the US, repealing the 18th amendment

22nd amendment

Amendment that created a 2 term limit on presidents.

23rd amendment

Washington D.C. receives 3 electoral votes and the residents are allowed to vote in the Presidential election

24th amendment

Eliminated the poll tax

25th amendment

Adopted in 1967 to establish procedures for filling vacancies in the office of president and vice president as well as providing for procedures to deal with the disability of a president.

26th amendment

Lowered the voting age from 21 to 18

27th amendment

Congress can't vote to give themselves raises (more money) until another election
