known as subclavian, triple lumen, Central line; temporary catheter placed at bedside and must be D/C’d before discharge and flushed after meds + Q8

Tunneled Catheters

hickman and broviac; permanent device for pt’s requiring long-term therapy, exit is distal to where it enters vein, flushed w heparin and NS at home

Implanted Port

permanent device for long-term therapy/small reservoir with septum + attached catheter; must use Huber needle and requires dressing changed when access q 7 days and flush w NS

PICC Line

enters body in antecubital fossa and terminates in SVC; used for long-term use

Blood Draws + Flushes from a Central Line

identify pt, a 10 ml syringe should only be used for any central line device
