Systole meaning
this describes the period in time when cardiomyocytes are contracting
Diastole meaning
this describes the period in time when cardiomyocytes are relaxing
systolic bp
(top number when taking bp) measure of force exerted on ur vessels while the heart is contracting or squeezing
diastolic bp
(bottom number when taking bp) measure of force exerted on ur blood vessels in between heartbeats while the heart is relaxing
what are the 5 phases/events of the cardiac cycle
for every heartbeat, phase 1-5 happen
Isovolumetric ventricular systole- when the ventricles start contracting but they aren't yet able to pump blood out of the heart.
Ventricular systole - when the ventricles are contracting AND moving blood out of the heart and into the aorta (L ventricle) or pulmonary arteries (R ventricle).
Isovolumetric ventricular diastole - when the ventricles start relaxing but they aren't yet able to fill with blood
Late ventricular diastole - this is when the ventricles are relaxing AND starting to fill with blood from the atria.
Atrial systole - when the atria are contracting, moving blood into the ventricles.
