Intro and Identify concerns, Specific Need, and Goal:

Good morning, my name is Haily Vu (I’m Godlin Boachie, and I’m Mercy Anjorin).

We are from Forest Park high school FCCLA and wanted to create a project that would impact our student body and the wider community, including parents. To do this, we used the FCCLA planning process and first Identified our concerns. According to our school social worker, there is a significant need for mental health intervention at Forest Park high school. He says that the biggest issue facing students is a lack of healthy coping skills, which leads to destructive behaviors. Another issue is the stigma around mental health, which prevents parents from actively being involved. Therefore, we set the goal of not only hosting an informational night on March 7th but also creating a mural by April 2nd.

Work Plan:

Now, for our work plan, It consisted of me communicating between mental health related organizations here at Forest Park high school, Godlin, putting together an organizing, FCCLA volunteers, and Mercy, creating visually appealing presentations and being our main speaker. We use the time in our leadership class and any flex periods if needed. At first there was an estimated cost of about $350, but we were able to get 550$ of funding from No Place For Hate.

FCCLA Purposes & FAMILY & CONSUMER SCIENCES:

Our project reflects 3 FCCLA purposes. To encourage individual and group involvement to achieve global cooperation and harmony. We are challenging our society's current stigma on Mental Health with the cooperation of youth and families, which also reflects the purpose: To promote greater understanding between youth and adults. The third purpose, to provide opportunities for youth voice in making decisions and to assume leadership roles.  The National FCCLA Program “Student Body” includes The Real You: To empower teens to maintain positive mental health, which also encompasses our project.

We were able to achieve our purpose because we all had a diverse set of assets and skills that we used to address a problem at our school. We worked together and pivoted when situations did not work out as planned, which are skills that will benefit us in future work environments.

FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCES: (National) Competency 12.3.3 Analyze the role of educational and family and social services support systems and resources in meeting human growth and development needs.
