New cards

Hollow Cathode Lamp

  • Emits light at a specific wavelength which is absorbed by the target metal.

  • Different metals would require a different type of Hollow Cathode Lamp (for example, copper would use copper lamp)

2
New cards

Atomizer

  • Heats up the atoms and causes them to transition into an excited state.

  • Can be a flame, or a furnace depending on type of AAS.

3
New cards

Monochromator

  • Isolates the specific wavelength of light which is absorbed by the atoms.

  • Filters out other wavelengths to make the measurement more accurate.

4
New cards

Detector

  • Measures the intensity of the transmitted light after absorption.

  • Converts light signal into electrical signals for analyisis.

5
New cards

Data Processor

  • Converts the electrical signals into readable numerical values.

  • Also plots the absorbance against the concentration and allows us to find the value of the metal concentration.
