What is the definition of a colony?
single cell separated from other cells. Formed from cell aggregate to endospore
What does contamination mean?
presence of unwanted microorganisms
What does degerming mean?
doesn’t kill any microorganisms only washes them away with soap and water
What is disinfection (disinfect)?
kills most pathogenic bacteria and viruses by boiling, exposure to UV radiation, or chemicals like Bac-down
What does inoculate or inoculation mean?
addition of a specific microorganism to media on purpose
What is media?
nutrient containing substrate capable of allowing microorganisms to grow. - solid form: agar - liquid form: broth
What is sterilization?
to kill all living microorganisms, viruses, prions, and endospores achieved by autoclaving, incineration, ionizing radiation, and chemicals
What is turbidity?
cloudy appearance of the broth (media) meaning the increased number of cells
Identify the two aspects of aseptic techniques.
What two conditions are used during the autoclave process?
pressure and temperature
What does the acronym BSL stand for?
Bio safety levels
Which BSL category includes the most dangerous microbes?
BSL-4
Which BSL category includes the least dangerous microbes?
BSL-1
What equipment is used to sterilize the inoculating loop and needle?
bunsen burner
What is the difference between sterilization and disinfection?
Which level of control is better, sterilization or disinfection?
Sterilization
What are the four things destroyed by sterilization?
Microorganisms, viruses, prions, and endospores
What are the two things killed by disinfection?
bacteria and viruses
