Anatomical Planes and Body Subdivisions

Subdivisions of the Abdomen

Areas created by lines superimposed over internal organs to demonstrate the regions in which they lie.

Sagittal plane

A vertical plane that passes through the body, as illustrated by a section through the head viewed from the right.

Transverse plane

Also known as a horizontal plane; it is used to create inferior views of the body, such as sections through the abdomen.

Horizontal plane

A common synonym for the transverse plane.

Frontal plane

Also known as a coronal plane; it provides sections such as the anterior view of the hip.

Coronal plane

A common synonym for the frontal plane.
