Chemical Bonding
Defines how atoms stay together in molecules.
Ionic Bonding
Metals and non-metals; electrons are taken.
Covalent Bonding
Non-metals and non-metals; electrons are shared.
Metallic Bonding
Metals and metals; involves a 'sea' of electrons.
Ionic Bonding
Occurs when metallic elements bond with non-metallic elements/compounds.
Electrostatic Forces
The attraction between opposite charges that pulls ions together in ionic bonding.
Salts
Another name for ionic compounds.
Lattice
The structure of ionic compounds where each ion is only bonded to a different type of ion.
Aqueous Form
Salts are electrical conductors when in this form.
Neutral
The overall charge of an ionic compound should always be this.
Swap and Drop
A method used to determine the chemical formula when charges don’t immediately cancel out.
Ion Naming Convention
For cations, we simply refer to the atom as an ion (e.g., Magnesium ion).
Ion Naming Convention
For anions, we typically alter the suffix of the atom to be -ide (e.g., Nitride).
Covalent Bond
Form when two atoms share an electron each.
Covalent bond capacity
The number of covalent bond it can have based on needed electrons to completely fill its outer shell.
