Anatomical Position
A uniform body orientation where the subject's eyes, face, body, palms, and feet/toes are all facing forward.
Axial Region
The body axis division consisting of the head, neck, and trunk.
Appendicular Region
The division of the body consisting of the limbs.
Anterior
Directional term meaning towards the front of the body.
Posterior
Directional term meaning towards the back of the body.
Cephalic Region
The surface region pertaining to the head.
Frontal Area
The surface region pertaining to the forehead.
Orbital Area
The surface region pertaining to the eye area.
Nasal Area
The surface region pertaining to the nose.
Oral Area
The surface region pertaining to the mouth, around where the lips would be.
Buccal Region
The surface region pertaining to the cheek.
Mental Region
The surface region pertaining to the chin.
Occipital Region
The surface region on the posterior of the head.
Cervical Area
The surface region pertaining to the neck.
Thoracic Area
The surface region pertaining to the chest.
Sternal Region
The chest region located where the breastbone is.
Auxiliary Region
The chest/back landmark region located by the armpit.
Mammary Region
The surface region where the breasts would be located.
Dorsum
The surface region pertaining to the back (also called the dorsal region).
Scapular Region
The back region where the outline of the shoulder blade is located.
Vertebral Region
The back region pertaining to the spine or spinal column.
Lumbar Region
The back region located between the lower ribs and the hips, pertaining to the loins.
Sacral Region
The region located underneath the lumbar region where the sacral bone is.
Gluteal Region
The surface region pertaining to the buttocks.
Perineal Region
The region between the genitals and the anus (spelled p-e-r-I-n-e-a-l).
Abdominal Region
The surface region pertaining to the stomach area.
Umbilical Region
The region located right where the belly button or navel is.
Inguinal Region
The region where the trunk and leg meet, pertaining to the groin area.
Pubic Region
The surface area located below the hips going inwards, where the genitals are located.
Acromial Region
The point of the shoulder, which is a part of the scapula.
Brachial Region
The surface region pertaining to the upper arm.
Antecubital Area
The area in the center front of the arm right where it bends.
Antebrachial Area
The surface region pertaining to the lower arm or forearm.
Carpal Region
The surface region pertaining to the wrist.
Oleocranal Region
The posterior region pertaining to the elbow.
Manus
The surface landmark term pertaining to the hand.
Palmar Region
The region pertaining to the palm of the hand.
Pollux
The anatomical term for the thumb.
Digital Region
The surface region pertaining to a finger or a toe.
Coxal Region
The surface region pertaining to the hips.
Femoral Region
The surface region pertaining to the thigh.
Patellar Region
The surface region pertaining to the kneecap.
Curl Region
The surface region pertaining to the lower leg.
Fibular Region
The lateral side of the lower leg (historically referred to as the peroneal region).
Pedal Region
The surface region pertaining to the foot.
Tarsal Region
The surface region pertaining to the ankle.

The anatomical term for the big toe or great toe.

Medial
Directional term meaning towards the midline of the body.
Lateral
Directional term meaning away from the midline of the body.
Intermediate
Directional term describing a position located in between medial and lateral.
Proximal
Directional term used primarily for limbs meaning closer to the point of origin.
Distal
Directional term used primarily for limbs meaning further away from the point of origin.
Superficial
Directional term meaning towards the surface of the body.
Deep
Directional term meaning away from the surface of the body or towards the inside.
