What is the first step of a router?
Identify the destination IP address in the packet.
If the destination IP is on locally connected, what happens to the packet on the router?
The packet is forwarded.
If the destination IP is on a remote subnet, what does the router do with the packet?
The packet will be forwarded to the nearest hop router/gateway until the final destination is reached.
What is static routing?
Involves you defining the routes yourself.
What are the advantages of static routing?
Easy to configure and manage on smaller networks, no overhead from routing protocols, easy to configure on sub networks, and more secure with no routing protocols to analyze.
What are the disadvantages of static routing?
Difficult to administer on large networks, no automatic method to prevent routing loops, if there’s a network you have to update the route manually, and no automatic rerouting if an outage occurs,
