Oedipus Complex
During Freud's Phallic stage (3−−7 years), a boy desires his mother and fears his father (castration anxiety).
Electra Complex
During Freud's Phallic stage (3−−7 years), a girl desires her father and resents her mother (penis envy).
Id
Present at birth; operates on the pleasure principle; contains Eros (self-preservation) and Thanatos (destruction/death drive).
Ego
Develops by age 3; operates on the reality principle and balances the Id using defense mechanisms.
Superego
Develops by age 5; internalizes rules via the Conscience (guilt) and Ideal Self (aspirations).
Primary Process Thinking
Associated with the Unconscious; involves wish fulfillment without logic or time concept; seen in young children or psychotic adults.
Secondary Process Thinking
Associated with the Conscious; logical, mature, time-oriented thinking capable of delaying gratification.
Manifest Content
The literal story of a dream.
Latent Content
The hidden symbolic wish fulfillment of a dream, called the 'royal road to the unconscious.'
Repression vs. Suppression
Repression is an unconscious forgetting of trauma, while Suppression is a conscious decision to deal with it later.
Splitting
A narcissistic defense where things are viewed as 'all good or all bad,' classic in Borderline Personality Disorder.
Cluster A Personality Disorders
The 'MAD' (Odd/Eccentric) group: Paranoid, Schizoid, and Schizotypal.
Cluster B Personality Disorders
The 'BAD' (Dramatic/Erratic) group: Histrionic, Narcissistic, Borderline, and Antisocial.
Cluster C Personality Disorders
The 'CAD' (Anxious/Fearful) group: Avoidant, Dependent, and OCPD.
Antisocial Personality Disorder
Diagnosed if ≥18 years old; requires a childhood history of Conduct Disorder; characterized by no remorse.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
Excessive worry about multiple domains lasting ≥6 months.
Panic Disorder
Recurrent unexpected panic attacks peaking within 10 minutes plus ≥1 month of worry about future attacks.
OCD Duration and Insight
Symptoms occur >1 hour/day; patient is aware they are unwanted (ego-dystonic).
PTSD vs. Acute Stress Disorder
PTSD lasts >1 month; Acute Stress Disorder lasts 2 days to 4 weeks.
Major Depression Stats
Duration ≥2 weeks; 60% have suicidal thoughts, 15% die by suicide, and 25% seek treatment.
SWAG (Depression Mnemonic)
Suicidality, Weight loss (>5%), Anhedonia, Guilt.
Dysthymia Duration
Adults ≥2 years; children ≥1 year.
Schizophrenia Phases and Diagnosis
Prodromal phase followed by active phase (≥1 month) for a total duration of ≥6 months.
Downward Drift
The tendency for patients with Schizophrenia to move toward a lower socioeconomic status.
Delirium Tremens (DTs)
Occurs on day 3 of alcohol withdrawal; ∼20% mortality if untreated.
CAGE Questionnaire
Cut down, Angry, Guilty, Eye-opener.
Formication
Tactile hallucinations known as 'cocaine bugs.'
Reactive Attachment Disorder
Childhood disorder characterized by being withdrawn and unresponsive to caregivers.
Disinhibited Social Engagement Disorder
Childhood disorder characterized by indiscriminately approaching and attaching to strangers.
Child Death Milestones
At 3−−6 years death is temporary/punishment; at ∼6 years death is final/irreversible; at ∼9 years they understand they can die.
Factitious Disorder (Munchausen)
Patient knows they are faking for the psychological need for attention (primary gain).
Malingering
Patient knows they are faking for an external reward, such as money or avoiding jail (secondary gain).
Conversion Disorder
Sudden motor or sensory loss with an inappropriate lack of concern ('la belle indiff rence').
Russell’s Sign
Knuckle scars caused by purging, seen in Bulimia.
Dissociative Fugue
Unplanned travel combined with the creation of a new identity.
Shaken Baby Syndrome Triad
Retinal hemorrhage, retinal detachment, and subdural haematoma.
Systematic Desensitisation
Therapy using relaxation plus graded exposure based on reciprocal inhibition.
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
Combines CBT with validation and distress tolerance; specifically designed for Borderline Personality Disorder.
DABDA (Stages of Grief)
Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance.
Reflective Interviewing
Technique where the provider repeats what the patient said to confirm understanding (e.g., 'You said your pain increased?').
