Potassium permanganate
A powerful oxidising agent with a deep pink colour that serves as a self-indicator in titrimetry.
Equivalence point potential (Fe2+/MnO4- system)
The calculated potential at the equivalence point for the titration of iron (II) with permanganate, given in the text as 21.51+0.77=1.14V.
Indicator blank
A determination used to minimise titration error by accounting for the excess potassium permanganate required to indicate the equivalence point.
Complexometric titration
A titration characterized by a condition of equilibrium among the species involved, relating reactant concentration to the volume of titrant added.
Formation constant
An equilibrium constant (also known as an instability constant) used to construct a titration curve from the stoichiometry of a complexometric reaction.
Quadridentate ligand
A ligand (represented as L) that forms an equilibrium with a metal ion M (CN = 4) according to the reaction M+L⇌ML.
Bidentate ligand
A ligand (represented as B) that reacts with a metal ion M in a step-wise fashion, such as M+2B⇌MB2.
E-Factor (Environmental factor)
An indicator of pollution effect calculated as the ratio of the mass of the waste (effluent) generated in kg to the mass of the desired product in kg.
E-Factor Formula
E-Factor=Mass of desired productMass of effluent produce.
Ethylene oxide effluent ratio
In the production of ethylene oxide, for every 44kg of product, 111kg of the effluent CaCl2 is produced.
