Fertilization
The process of sperm and egg merging to form a zygote.
Implantation
The process of the blastocyst attaching to the uterine lining.
Placenta
An organ that provides oxygen and nutrients to the fetus and removes waste.
Amniotic Fluid
Fluid within the amniotic sac, provides cushioning and maintains the temperature for the fetus.
Gametogenesis
The process by which gametes (sperm and eggs) are formed.
Oogenesis
The development of eggs in females.
Spermatogenesis
The process of sperm cell development in males.
Teratogens
Substances that cause abnormal development in embryos or fetuses.
Congenital Defects
Birth defects that occur during embryonic or fetal development.
Gravida
The total number of times a woman has been pregnant.
Para
The number of pregnancies that resulted in birth after 20 weeks.
hCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin)
A hormone produced during pregnancy that is the basis for pregnancy tests.
Supine Hypotensive Syndrome
A condition occurring when a pregnant woman lies on her back, causing pressure on the vena cava and resulting in reduced blood flow.
Quickening
The first movements of the fetus felt by the pregnant woman.
Hyperemesis Gravidarum
A severe form of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.
Pica
The craving for, and consumption of, non-nutritive substances during pregnancy.
Chadwick’s Sign
Bluish discoloration of the vagina and cervix seen during pregnancy due to increased blood flow.
