Human papillomavirus (HPV)
The most common sexually transmitted infection.
Lyme disease
Transmitted by deer ticks.
Herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV-1, HSV-2)
Two types: Type 1 commonly causes cold sores; Type 2 is commonly sexually transmitted; either can affect mouth or genitals.
Scabies
A highly contagious skin condition that results from a mite that burrows beneath the skin, leaving its feces behind.
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
Virus that destroys the immune system.
Tuberculosis (TB)
Disease that primarily affects the lungs but can spread to other parts of the body; caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
Boil
Localized skin infection usually caused by staphylococcus bacteria.
Tinea (ringworm)
Fungal skin infection that gets its name because it appears serpentine, like a worm.
Chlamydia
STI caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis.
Pinworm
Transmitted by the oral-fecal route. Causes anal itching and nighttime restlessness.
Trichomoniasis
Condition that affects the reproductive organs and can be transmitted through sexual intercourse.
Pneumonia
Respiratory condition in which lung tissue is inflamed, usually causing difficulty breathing and cough; may also be caused by fungus or chemicals.
Gonorrhea
Highly contagious condition transmitted by sexual intercourse and caused by gonococcus bacteria.
Mononucleosis
Highly contagious viral infection spread through saliva; caused by Epstein-Barr virus or cytomegalovirus (CMV).
Candidiasis
Commonly called a "yeast infection." May be oropharyngeal, vaginal, or invasive.
Strep throat
Inflammation and infection of the throat caused by streptococcus bacteria.
Lice
Can affect the head or pubic area; spread by contact with personal items used by an infected person; causes itching.
Syphilis
Infectious venereal disease caused by a spirochete bacterium.
Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)
Syndrome that results in decreased resistance to infections. Transmitted by blood and body fluids.
Conjunctivitis
Commonly called pink eye. Can be caused by bacteria, viruses, and allergies.
