Imagery
Words that trigger a mental image and appeal to five senses, making the reader feel present by being very descriptive.
Personification
Giving human traits to non-human things to make the situation feel alive and build connection with nature.
Foreshadowing
A hint of what’s going to occur later, building suspense by preparing for change.
Onomatopoeia
A word that sounds like a noise, adding realism by pulling readers into action scenes.
Alliteration
Repeating the same starting sound in a set of words, adding rhythm and highlighting an idea.
Assonance
A set of words that sound similar due to the repetition of vowel sounds, creating a musical or poetic tone.
Anaphora
Repetition at the start of a sentence or phrase to help the reader remember the message and create a sense of hope, fear, determination, or sorrow.
Simile
A comparison using the words 'like' or 'as', showing similarity between two things to create clarity about an idea.
Metaphor
A direct comparison saying one thing 'is' another, often symbolic, to create a symbolic meaning.
Vivid Verbs
Strong and specific action or emotion words that paint a picture of an emotion.
Suspense/Tension
Builds anticipation, danger, stress, etc., preparing the reader for a climax.
Repetition
Repeating a word or phrase for emphasis, reinforcing important ideas, themes, or feelings.
Tone
The author's attitude (angry, happy, etc.) that shapes how the reader feels when reading.
Diction
Type of word choice (formal, descriptive, informal, etc.), such as 'Mom' vs 'Mother'.
