What is the definition of stabling?

Leaving rail traffic unattended and secured.

What must be taken in consideration about where you stable a train?

  1. Wherever practicable, NOT be stabled where they obstruct yellow marked walkways.

  2. Wherever possible, NOT stabled across bitumen roads or walkways where they may restrict movements of emergency services, vehicles, or personnel

  3. Wherever possible, leave a gap of at least 1 metre between stationary railcars and railcars being stabled on the same road.

  4. NOT where they will foul any converging road, except when instructed to do so by Depot Master, Yard Master or Driver in charge of shunting (i.e. Shed Driver).

What do fouling point markers looks like, and where are they placed?

Fouling points are marked by a fouling point marker, which is an upturned piece of rail that is painted white (these have traditionally been referred to as a clearance board).

Fouling point markers shall be placed between the two adjacent tracks and be aligned with first sleeper on the clear side of the fouling point.
