- Oversimplifies complex phenomena so lacks validity

- No meaningful generalisations can be made without further validation

+ Can be repeated so can find reliability
+ Processes have enabled psychologists. to establish norms of ‘typical’ behaviour

- Poor research design may have long term impact
Example: Poorly constructed IQ tests leading to educational opportunities (11+ exams) shown to be unfair but long term impacts remained
