What does Archimedes Principle state?

An object placed in a fluid pushes down with a force equal to its mass while the fluid pushes up with a force equal to the mass of the fluid displaced by the object.

2
New cards

What is Down Force?

Down Force is the mass of the object

3
New cards

What is Up Force?

Up Force is the mass of the fluid displaced by the object.

4
New cards

What does it mean for the object if the forces are unbalanced?

If the forces are unbalanced the result is movement.

5
New cards

What does it mean for the object if the forces are balanced?

If the forces are balanced the result is no movement and the object stays at rest.

6
New cards

What two states of matter are considered fluids?

Gas and Liquid

7
New cards

What is negative buoyancy?

Negative buoyancy is when the mass of a fluid is greater than the mass of the fluid being displaced which causes the object to sink.

8
New cards

What is neutral buoyancy?

Neutral buoyancy is when the mass of an object is equal to the mass of the fluid being displaced which causes no movement.

9
New cards

What is positive buoyancy?

Positive buoyancy is when the mass of an object is less than the mass of a fluid being displaced which causes an object to rise.

10
New cards

What is it when objects float?

Objects that float happen when the mass is equal to the mass of the fluid being displaced.

11
New cards

What are some examples for Negative Buoyancy?

Human, brick, sunken ship

12
New cards

What are some examples for Positive Buoyancy?

helium balloon, hot air balloon, beach ball (held!)

13
New cards

What are some examples for Neutral Buoyancy?

seaweed hovering, sea turtle, fish, blimp, cloud, scuba diver

14
New cards

What are some examples of objects that float?

boat, raft, buoy

15
New cards

What is the difference between floating and neutral buoyancy?

Floating is when an object is resting on top of a fluid and neutral buoyancy is when an object is suspended in the fluid.

What are ways you can manipulate/control buoyancy by?

  1. Make the object lighter/heavier (change the mass) (down force)

  2. making an object bigger or smaller changes the volume of the fluid displaced and therefore the mass of the fluid displaced. (up force)
