Cranial cavity
The space inside the skull that houses the brain.
Thoracic cavity
Chest cavity that contains the heart and lungs; separated from the abdominal cavity by the diaphragm.
Diaphragm
A dome-shaped muscle that divides the thoracic and abdominal cavities; primary muscle of respiration.
Abdominal cavity
Cavity within the abdomen that houses most digestive organs.
Vertebral canal
Hollow canal within the vertebral column that contains the spinal cord.
Pleural cavity
Fluid-filled space around each lung formed by the pleural membranes.
Mediastinum
Central compartment of the thoracic cavity between the lungs; contains the heart, trachea, esophagus, and other structures.
Pericardial cavity
Potential space around the heart within the mediastinum.
Abdominopelvic cavity
Continuous cavity that combines the abdominal and pelvic cavities.
Pelvic cavity
Cavity within the pelvis that contains reproductive, urinary, and rectal structures.
Dorsal
Central nervous system that is the cranial and vertebral cavities
Ventral
Thoracic, Abdominal, and Pelvic Cavities
