A legal doctrine that allows limited use of copyrighted material without the owner’s permission under certain conditions.

Research Skills

The ability to effectively gather, evaluate, analyze, and interpret information from various sources, including databases, literature, experiments, and observations enabling individuals to make informed decisions, generate new knowledge, and contribute to the advancement of their respective fields.

Bibliography

A list of all the sources explored in the research process.

Keyword (Research)

Specific, relevant search terms.

Paraphrase

To express the meaning of a text in different words, often used in research writing.

Synthesis

The combination of ideas to form one theory.

Reliable Source / Credible Source

Information presented in a professional way, with a formal tone, includes source documentation, and author and/or publisher information.

Biography

A non-fiction text that an author writes about a different person’s life.

Open Source

Work meant to be shared freely with the world.

Source Relevancy

Information that directly helps answer the research question.

Autobiography

A non-fiction text that an author writes about their own life.

Direct Quotation

An exact reproduction of the words of an author or a speaker that are set off in quotation marks.

URL Extension

The notation at the end of a web address that categorizes the website type.

Primary Source

The “firsthand” eye-witness accounts of an event.

Domain Address

The official name of a website.

Peer-Reviewed Journal

A high-quality source of information which uses experts to screen each article submitted to the publication.

Liability

The state of being legally responsible for something.

Summarizing

Briefly restating the main ideas or key points of a text.

Citation

Reference to a source of information, such as a book, article, or website, used to support a statement or claim, typically including details like the author’s name, the title of the work, and the publication date.

Secondary Source

These resources are used to interpret the primary sources in order to determine their validity; written about the primary sources.

Paraphrased Quotation

The author is conveying the meaning of what was said without necessarily repeating the exact words of the speaker.

Copyright

Legal protection for original works.

Atrribution

Giving credit to the creator or source of a piece of work or information, acknowledging their contribution and allowing others to know where the information came from.

Citation Style

A set of guidelines for citing the basic information required to identify and locate a specific publication within a work.

MLA Citation Style

The citation style most commonly used in humanities.
