Axial Skeleton

The part of the skeleton that consists of the skull, vertebral column, and thoracic cage.

Cranial Bones

Bones that form the protected case around the brain, totaling 8 in number.

Facial Bones

Bones that form the structure of the face, totaling 14 in number.

Foramen Magnum

The large opening in the occipital bone through which the spinal cord connects to the brain.

Zygomatic Arch

The bony arch on the side of the skull that forms the cheekbone, composed of the temporal and zygomatic bones.

Paranasal Sinuses

Air-filled spaces in the bones of the skull that are connected to the nasal cavity.

Sacrum

A large, triangular bone at the base of the vertebral column formed by five fused vertebrae.

True Ribs

Ribs 1-7 that attach individually to the sternum via their costal cartilages.

False Ribs

Ribs 8-12 that do not attach directly to the sternum; includes floating ribs 11-12.

Appendicular Skeleton

The part of the skeleton that includes the limbs and the girdles that attach them to the axial skeleton.

Clavicle

A bone also known as the collarbone that connects the arm to the body.

Os Coxa

The hip bone, each os coxa is formed by the fusion of the ilium, ischium, and pubis.

Femur

The thigh bone, which is the longest bone in the body.

Carpals

The eight bones of the wrist.

Phalanges

The bones of the fingers and toes; each digit has multiple phalanges.

Iliac Crest

The upper border of the ilium of the pelvis.

Greater Sciatic Notch

An indentation in the ilium through which the sciatic nerve exits the pelvic cavity.

Xiphoid Process

The small cartilaginous process at the lower end of the sternum.

Spinous Process

The bony projection off the posterior of each vertebra.

Glenoid Cavity

The socket in the scapula that accepts the head of the humerus.
