Functionalism

A sociological system of thinking based on the ideas of Emile Durkheim that examines large-scale social structures and how each part helps keep society stable and moving toward equilibrium.

Conflict Theory

A sociological perspective that views culture as inherently unequal, based upon social factors such as gender, class, race, and age.

Felipe Landa Jocano

A pre-eminent Philippine anthropologist who earned his post-graduate degree at the University of Chicago and merged Western modernization theory with pre-colonial Philippine heritage to support post-WWII nation-building.

Wave Migration Theory

A theory proposed by Henry Otley Beyer suggesting that humans arrived in the Philippines in migratory waves, culminating in Malays becoming the dominant group prior to Spanish arrival in the 1500s.

Henry Otley Beyer

An American anthropologist born on July 13, 1883, in Edgewood, Iowa, who developed the Wave Migration Theory after attending an exhibit at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exhibition in Missouri.

Austronesian Migration Theory

Also known as the Austronesian Expansion Theory, it posits that population growth in the Philippines originated from Austronesians migrating from the Chinese mainland starting 6,000 years ago and reaching the Philippines around 3,000 BC.

A professor of Archaeology and Anthropology at the Australian National University who proposed the Austronesian Migration Theory.

Tabon Cave Discovery

The 1962 discovery in Palawan of a human skull cap and jaw portion, proving that the Philippines was inhabited as early as 21,000 or 22,000 years ago.
