Radiation
A form of energy that travels through space or matter in the form of waves or particles, coming from natural or man-made sources.
Ionizing Radiation
Higher energy electromagnetic waves or heavy particles with enough energy to pull an electron from orbit.
Non-ionizing Radiation
Lower energy electromagnetic waves that do not have enough energy to pull an electron from orbit, but can excite the electron.
Electromagnetic Radiation
Forms of ionizing radiation such as X-rays and gamma rays.
Particulate Radiation
Ionizing radiation consisting of alpha particles and beta particles associated with radioactive decay.
RMIVUXG
The acronym for the electromagnetic spectrum breakdown from longest to shortest wavelength: Radio waves, Microwaves, Infrared, Visible light, Ultraviolet, X-rays, and Gamma rays.
α-particles
Helium nuclei ejected from a nucleus.
β-particles
Electrons ejected from a nucleus.
Cosmic rays
Particulate and electromagnetic radiation emitted by the sun and stars.
Terrestrial radiation
Radioactive materials from deposits of uranium, thorium, and other radionuclides in the Earth's crust.
Internally deposited radionuclides
Natural metabolites existing inside the body, mainly potassium-40 (40K).
Radon
The largest source of natural environmental radiation; a radioactive gas from uranium decay that emits alpha particles and contributes dose only to the lung.
Medical Imaging
The largest man-made source of ionizing radiation, with diagnostic x-rays constituting approximately 3.2mSv/yr.
Radiation Protection
A tool used to protect health against the risks generated by ionizing radiation, including the prevention of deterministic effects and reduction of stochastic effects.
Justification
The principle that a radiologic procedure should only be performed if the benefits outweigh the risks.
Optimization (ALARA)
The principle of keeping radiation doses As Low As Reasonably Achievable while obtaining the necessary diagnostic or therapeutic result.
Dose Limits
Maximum allowable radiation doses set to protect workers and the public from harmful effects of prolonged exposure.
Exposure
The intensity of radiation or the amount of ionization produced by X-rays or gamma rays in air; SI unit is Air kerma (Gya).
Absorbed Dose
The energy absorbed per unit mass of tissue; SI unit is Gray (Gyt) where 1Gy=1J/kg, and special unit is rad (1rad=0.01Gy).
Effective Dose
The overall biological risk of radiation exposure to the entire body; SI unit is Sievert (Sv) and special unit is rem (1Sv=100rem).
Radioactivity
The rate of decay of radioactive atoms per unit time; SI unit is Becquerel (Bq) and special unit is Curie (Ci).
Health Physics
The branch of science concerned with providing radiation protection and minimizing radiation occupational dose to the public, a term coined during the Manhattan Project.
Linear Non-Threshold (LNT) model
A model stating that even a small dose of radiation carries a probabilistic risk of stochastic effects like cancer, leukemia, or genetic mutations.
Time
A cardinal principle of radiation protection; exposure is directly related to duration, so exposure time should be kept as short as possible.
Distance
A cardinal principle of radiation protection; as distance increases, radiation exposure decreases according to the Inverse Square Law.
Shielding
A cardinal principle of radiation protection; positioning materials like lead between radiation and exposed persons to reduce exposure levels.
Tenth-Value Layer (TVL)
The thickness of absorber required to reduce the radiation intensity to one-tenth (1/10) of its original value.
Half-Value Layer (HVL)
The thickness of absorber required to reduce the radiation intensity to one-half (1/2) of its original value.
Protective X-ray Tube Housing
A housing that must reduce leakage radiation to less than 100mR/hr (1mGya/hr) at a distance of 1meter.
Positive-Beam Limitation (PBL)
Automatic, light-localized, variable-aperture collimators that adjust the X-ray field size to match the image receptor; must be accurate within 2% of the SID.
Filtration
Total filtration (inherent plus added) must be at least 2.5mmAl for diagnostic beams operated above 70kVp, and 1.5mmAl between 50 and 70kVp.
Reproducibility
The requirement that radiation intensity variation should not exceed 5% for any given radiographic technique when repeated exposures are made.
Linearity
The ability of a radiographic unit to produce constant radiation output for various mA and time combinations; maximum acceptable variation is 10% between adjacent mA stations.
Dead Man Type
A type of exposure control, such as a fluoroscopic foot pedal, that requires continuous pressure to operate.
Bucky Slot Cover
An automatic cover of at least 0.25mmPb equivalent that protects the radiologist at the gonadal level when the Bucky tray is moved.
Dose Area Product (DAP)
A measure of the total radiation delivered to the patient calculated as Radiation dose × Area of the X-ray beam; expressed in Gy⋅cm2.
Primary Protective Barrier
A barrier designed to shield areas from the useful/primary beam; calculated to be 7ft high.
Secondary Protective Barrier
Barriers designed to shield areas from secondary radiation (scatter and leakage), such as the operating console booth.
Workload (W)
The level of radiation activity in a room based on the number of examinations, expressed in milliampere-minutes per week (mA⋅min/wk).
Use Factor (U)
The fraction or percentage of time a specific barrier is directly hit by the primary X-ray beam.
Ionization Chamber
A gas-filled radiation detector that is the instrument of choice for measuring radiation intensity and for precise calibration of X-ray systems.
Geiger-Muller Counter
A sensitive gas-filled detector used for contamination control; it can detect single ionizing events but is limited to less than 1mGya/hr.
Scintillation Detectors
Devices using crystals like thallium-activated sodium iodide (NaI(Tl)) that emit light flashes in response to radiation; used in CT and gamma cameras.
Thermoluminescence Dosimetry (TLD)
Personnel monitoring device using materials like Lithium fluoride (LiF) that glow when heated after being irradiated.
Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL)
A personnel monitoring device using aluminum oxide (Al2O3) that emits light when stimulated by a laser beam, offering higher sensitivity than TLD.
Entrance Skin Dose (ESD)
The patient dose most often reported due to ease of measurement; often estimated at 40mGyt/min for fluoroscopy.
Mean Marrow Dose (MMD)
The average radiation dose to the entire active bone marrow used to estimate hematologic risks.
Cumulative Effective Dose Limit
The occupational limit calculated as 10mSvunits×age in years.
