Acclimatization

becoming used to something over a period of time by increasing length and intensity

Acute mountain sickness

illness stemming from the body being unused to high altitudes and low oxygen concentration, creating tissue disruption in the brain

Basal cell cancer

type of skin cancer in basal cells which produces new skin cells

Conductive heat exchange

physical contact resulting in heat loss/gain

Convective heat exchange

occurs when air/water moves around an individual, resulting in heat loss/gain

Dehydration

experiencing a lack of fluids with loss of less than 2% of body weight in fluids

Electrolyte

caused by inadequate hydration during exercise/high temperatures, resulting in muscle spasms, during/after exercise

dehydrated during exercise (usually in high temperatures) to the point of inability to continue

Heat rash

red, raised rash with sensations of prickling/tingling when sweating, occurs to sweat not being evaporated

Heatstroke

characterized by CNS dysfunction/potential tissue damage from very high body temperature

Heat syncope

rapid physical fatigue due to overexposure to heat

High altitude pulmonary edema

lungs accumulate fluid in alveolar walls

High altitude cerebral edema

increased cerebral blood flow, increasing pressure, due to high altitudes

Hyponatremia

a condition with an abnormally low concentration of sodium in the blood due to over hydrating

Hypothermia

condition where the body's temperature drops to the point of damage

Melanoma

type of skin cancer, developing in melanocytes (cells that produce melatonin)

normal metabolic function results in heat being created

warmth radiating from a source

relative humidity

amount of water vapor in the air compared to the temperature

Rhabdomyolysis

a condition where damaged skeletal muscles fact rapidly break down

Squamous cell cancer

a type of skin cancer developing in the squamous cells, found in the middle/outer layers of skin

Wet bulb globe temperature

a composite temperature used to estimate the effect of temperature, humidity, and solar radiation on humans
