Light microscope
A compound optical instrument used to examine biological specimens.
Magnification
The visual enlargement of a specimen under a microscope.
Resolution
The clarity and ability of a microscope to distinguish fine detail.
Contrast
The visible difference in intensity between the specimen and its background.
Condenser
A primary microscope component that focuses light onto the specimen.
Iris diaphragm
A primary microscope component that regulates the amount of light reaching the specimen.
Ocular (binocular) lens
The eyepiece lens system located at the top of a compound microscope.
Body
The structural frame of a compound microscope that holds the optical components.
Stage
The platform of a compound microscope where the specimen slide is placed.
Objective lenses
The primary magnifying lenses on a compound microscope, including scanning, low power, high dry power, and oil immersion.
Scanning objective lens
A low-magnification objective lens used for initial scanning of a specimen.
Low power objective lens
An objective lens used for low-magnification viewing of a specimen.
High dry power objective lens
A high-magnification objective lens used without immersion oil.
Oil immersion objective lens
A high-magnification objective lens designed to be used with immersion oil.
Total magnification
The overall magnification achieved by multiplying ocular lens power by objective lens power.
Parfocal
The property of a microscope remaining approximately in focus when switching between objective lenses.
Fine adjustment
A control knob used for precise, sharp focusing of a specimen.
Coarse adjustment
A control knob used for broad focusing and major stage movement.
Field of view
The total visible circular area seen when looking through the microscope.
Depth of field
The vertical thickness or depth of a specimen that remains in acceptable focus.
Cross-section slide (fixed)
A fixed, permanent slide containing a thin transverse slice of a specimen.
Whole mount slide (fixed)
A fixed, permanent slide containing an entire intact specimen.
Wet mount slide
A temporary slide prepared using a liquid specimen covered by a cover slip.
Cover slip
A thin piece of glass or plastic placed over a liquid specimen on a wet mount slide.
Paramecium
A single-celled biological organism studied under the microscope.
Amoeba
A single-celled biological organism studied under the microscope.
Pseudopods
Temporary cytoplasmic extensions used by organisms like Amoeba for movement.
Flagella
Long, whip-like cellular structures used for organism locomotion.
Cilia
Short, hair-like cellular projections used for locomotion or movement.
Plastids
Plant cell organelles categorized into chloroplasts, amyloplasts, and chromoplasts.
Chloroplasts
A specific subcategory of plastids found in biological specimens.
Amyloplasts
A specific subcategory of plastids involved in starch storage.
Chromoplasts
A specific subcategory of pigment-containing plastids.
