stage 1
Duration: Lasts just a few minutes (transition from wakefulness to sleep)
What happens:
You drift in and out of sleep
May experience hypnic jerks (sudden muscle twitches)
Easily awakened
Feels like: That floaty, dreamy moment where you’re half-asleep but still aware
stage 2
Duration: 45–55% of total sleep time (the longest stage)
What happens:
Heart rate and body temp drop
Brain starts shutting out external stimuli
Memory consolidation begins (especially motor skills)
Feels like: You’re asleep, but not fully out of it — harder to wake than N1
stage 3
Duration: 15–25% of total sleep time (mostly in the first half of the night)
What happens:
(muscle growth, immune function, tissue repair)
Brain clears out waste (literally detoxes)
Very hard to wake up
Feels like: Total knockout. If someone wakes you up, you’re groggy and confused
What is Non-REM sleep?
Non-REM sleep is a restful sleep state characterized by slower brain waves, reduced heart rate, and no eye movement.

Psychoactive
capable of altering thinking, perception, and memory
In a typical cycle, it goes
