Fibrous Tunic

Outermost layer of the eye; includes the sclera and cornea.

Sclera

White part of the eye; provides protection and muscle attachment.

Cornea

Transparent, bulging part at the front of the eye; refracts light.

Vascular Tunic

Middle layer of the eye; contains blood vessels and structures such as the iris and ciliary body.

Choroid

Part of the vascular tunic that contains blood vessels.

Iris

Colored part of the eye that contains smooth muscle controlling pupil diameter.

Ciliary body

Structure that controls lens shape for focusing via suspensory ligaments.

Neural Tunic

Also known as the retina; contains photoreceptors.

Photoreceptors

Cells in the retina that detect light; include rods and cones.

Rods

Photoreceptors responsible for black and white vision in low light conditions.

Cones

Photoreceptors responsible for color vision.

Fovea centralis

Small depression in the retina with the sharpest vision, located inside the macula lutea.

Optic disc

Blind spot in the eye where the optic nerve exits; contains no photoreceptors.

Anterior cavity

Front section of the eye containing the aqueous humor, which is constantly replaced.

Aqueous humor

Watery fluid in the anterior cavity of the eye; helps maintain intraocular pressure.

Canal of Schlemm

Structure that drains aqueous humor; blockage can lead to glaucoma.

Posterior cavity

Cavity behind the lens filled with vitreous humor.

Vitreous humor

Gel-like substance in the posterior cavity that maintains eye shape and keeps the retina in place.
