What are the three basic shapes of bacteria?
Round, Rod, Spiral
What are bacteria?
Specific types of small cells that come in many varieties.
What is a virus?
A microscopic particle much smaller than a cell.
What are fungi?
Plant-like organisms that include molds and yeasts, which invade or grow on another organism to get food.
What is a parasite?
An organism made up of one or more cells that is larger and more complicated than bacteria or a virus.
What are examples of parasites?
Protozoa, Arthropods (like scabies, lice, bed bugs), and Helminths (like roundworms, tapeworms, and flukes).
What is the inflammation cascade?
A series of biochemical reactions that occur when the skin is irritated or inflamed.
What do leukocytes do during inflammation?
They are sent by the immune system to the site of inflammation and release cytokines to signal other immune responses.
What are Stage 1 wounds?
Wounds that only affect the epidermis or are superficial, such as sunburn.
What are Stage 2 wounds?
Second-degree burns, blisters, where the epidermis is lifting off the dermis.
What are Stage 3 wounds?
Third-degree burns that extend into the dermal tissue and cause subcutaneous injury.
What are Stage 4 wounds?
The deepest injuries that involve muscle and bone exposure.
What are nosocomial infections?
Infections acquired in a hospital or other healthcare environments.
What is asepsis?
The state of being free of pathogenic microbes.
What are semicritical items?
Inanimate objects that do not ordinarily penetrate body surfaces but have the potential to be exposed to blood or contaminated items.
What is the preferred method of sterilization for the esthetics industry?
Steam under pressure.
What rights do OSHA inspectors have?
They have the right to enter and inspect any facility at their own choosing.
What is hepatitis?
Inflammation of the liver caused by viral infection, resulting in injury, inflammation, or destruction of liver cells.
What is HIV?
Human immunodeficiency virus that can lead to AIDS.
What is tuberculosis?
A highly infectious disease that most often affects the lungs but can occur in almost any part of the body.
What are pathogens?
Organisms that cause disease.
What is the CDC?
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a federal agency that establishes guidelines for public health.
What are standard precautions?
A concept that requires practitioners to behave as though all blood and body fluids are known to be hazardous.
What is disinfection?
The treatment of a surface to destroy potentially pathogenic microorganisms.
