Operant conditioning
is a type of learning where consequences of behaviour determine the likelihood that it will be performed again in the future.
Operant
It is any response that acts on the environment to produce some kind of consequence.
Three Phase model
Antecedent
Behaviour
Consequence
Antecedent
The stimulus that occurs before the behaviour
Behaviour
Is the voluntary action that occurs in the presence of the antecedent stimulus
Consequence
The environment event that occurs immediately after the behaviour and has an effect on the occurrence of the behaviour
The types of consequence
Reinforcement - Pos/Neg
Punishment - Pos/Neg
Reinforcement
refers to when a stimulus strengths/increases the frequency or likelihood of a response that it follows.
Positive reinforcement
Giving or applying a positive stimulus after he desired response has been made
Negative reinforcement
Removal or avoidance of an unpleasant stimulus
Punishment
Refers to when a stimulus weakens/decreases the frequency or likelihood of a response that it follows
Positive punishment
Giving a negative/unpleasant stimulus after an undesired response has been elicited
Negative punishment
Removal of a pleasant stimulus
Negative punishment as a response cost
The removal of any valued stimulus whether or not the stimulus causes the behaviour
What’s the difference between classical conditioning and operant conditioning
CC associates stimuli together where as OC associates stimuli with behaviours that are influenced by consequences
