Stereoisomers
Molecules with the same molecular formula but different spatial arrangements.
E-Z Isomerism
Stereoisomerism where groups are on the same (Z) or opposite (E) sides of a double bond.
E isomer
Isomer with highest priority groups on opposite sides of a double bond.
Z isomer
Isomer with highest priority groups on the same side of a double bond.
Cahn-Ingold-Prelog (CIP) Rules
Rules for assigning priority to groups based on atomic number at a double bond or chiral center.
Chiral centre
A carbon atom bonded to four different groups.
Optical isomers
Isomers that are non-superimposable mirror images.
Enantiomers
Two optical isomers that are mirror images of each other.
Optical activity
The capacity of optical isomers to rotate plane-polarized light.
Racemic mixture
A 1:1 mixture of enantiomers, resulting in no net optical
