protects inner organs (from invasion by microorganisms and dna damage caused by UV), prevents dehydration, acts as sensory organ, maintains temp., underlying hypodermic, STORES FATS.

thick skin - epidermis
contains 5 layers: includes STRATUM LUCIDUM
appearance: FRICTION RIDGES - tire threads, prints
function sensation, manipulation of objects
located in PALMS of hands and SOLES OF FEET
thin skin - epidermis
contains 4 layers: stratum lucidum is ABSENT
appearance: smooth with irregular grooves
function: NORMAL SKIN function
located in most areas throughout body
basal cell
cell of epidermis that is a cuboidal stem cell in the stratum basale that produces keratinocytes
keratinocyte
cell in the STRATUM SPINOSUM and above that manufactures and stores the protein keratin and water-repelling glycolipid that helps prevent water loss from the body
