Lens

Bends and focuses light onto the sensor using glass elements.

Aperture

Controls the size of the opening inside the lens to let in more or less light.

Shutter

Opens and closes to control how long light is allowed to hit the sensor.

Image Sensor

Replaces traditional film in digital models, turning incoming light into electronic image data.

camera body

The protective, light-tight housing that holds all parts together.

lens mount

The metal ring on the front where interchangeable lenses attach.

viewfinder

Allows you to frame and preview your shots either optically or electronically.

shutter button

The physical trigger pressed to take a photo or record video.

memory card

Powers the device and saves your digital files.

ISO

a camera setting that measures your sensor's sensitivity to light, forming part of the exposure triangle alongside aperture and shutter speed
